YouTube info panels to display news publisher's govt funding

YouTube which had launched 'information panels' for news-related videos to flag misinformation on its platform, said these boxes will now highlight whether the publisher of the content is funded by the government. "Our goal is to equip users with additional information to help them better understand the sources of news content that they choose to watch on YouTube. This information panel will be displayed on the watch page of all the videos on its channel," YouTube Director (Head of News Partnerships) Tim Katz said in a blogpost. He added that these additional information panels will be available in English and Hindi. Katz explained that if a channel is owned by a news publisher that is funded by a government, an information panel will surface that indicates that the publisher is "funded in whole or in part" or a "public broadcast service", with a link to the publisher's Wikipedia page. In March, YouTube had announced that it will start showing 'information panels' -- flagging ...

Digital doppelgangers being used to bypass anti-fraud measures: Kaspersky Lab

Global cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab has published results of an investigation into Genesis, an e-shop that is trading over 60,000 stolen and legitimate digital identities and making successful credit card fraud that much easier to conduct. This marketplace as well as other malicious tools involve abusing the machine-learning based anti-fraud approach of digital masks -- a unique, trusted customer profile based on known device and behaviour characteristics.Every time we enter our financial, payment and personal information in an online transaction, advanced, analytic, machine learning anti-fraud solutions match us against something called a digital mask. These masks are unique to each user and combine the fingerprints of devices and browsers commonly used to make payments and bank online -- like screen and OS information, a range of browser data like headers, time zone, installed plugins, window size etc) with advanced analytics and machine learning (the individual user's cookies,

PIO-led team's CubeSat to be launched by NASA

A team led by an Indian American student has been chosen by NASA to have their CubeSat -- a mini research satellite to detect cosmic rays -- flown into space on future missions of the US space agency. The researchers from the Yale Undergraduate Aerospace Association (YUAA), led by 21-year-old Keshav Raghavan, are among the 16 teams across the country whose CubeSats will be flown into space on missions planned to launch in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The team's CubeSat BLAST (Bouchet Low-Earth Alpha/Beta Space Telescope) is named for physicist Edward A Bouchet -- the first African American to receive a PhD in America. Students designed the satellite over the course of four years, and received the launch grant through NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative competition. According to the NASA, BLAST is a scientific investigation mission to map the distribution of galactic cosmic radiation across the night sky. The satellite will identify and count alpha particles and beta particles in the rays, and ...

Artificial atoms created for quantum computing

Scientists have created artificial atoms that generate single photons, an advance that may be a big step in efforts to develop all-optical quantum computing. The artificial atoms -- which work in air and at room temperature -- were created by drilling holes into a thin two-dimensional sheet of hexagonal boron nitride with a gallium-focused ion beam. "Our work provides a source of single photons that could act as carriers of quantum information or as qubits. We've patterned these sources, creating as many as we want, where we want," said Benjamin J Aleman, from University of Oregon in the US. "We'd like to pattern these single photon emitters into circuits or networks on a microchip so they can talk to each other, or to other existing qubits, like solid-state spins or superconducting circuit qubits," said Aleman. Artificial atoms were discovered three years ago in flakes of 2D hexagonal boron nitride, a single insulating layer of alternating boron and nitrogen atoms in a lattice that ..

Global computing effort to help decode gravitational waves

Scientists are inviting the public to lend their computers to unlock the secrets contained in gravitational waves observed when black holes smash together. First predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916, gravitational waves are ripples or disturbances in space-time that encode important information about changing gravitational fields. Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)'s first detection of gravitational waves from colliding black holes in 2015 opened a new window on the universe, enabling scientists to observe cosmic events spanning billions of years and to better understand the makeup of the Universe. For many scientists, the discovery also fuelled expansion of efforts to more thoroughly test the theories that help explain how the universe works -- with a particular focus on inferring as much information as possible about the black holes prior to their collision. Zachariah Etienne, an assistant professor at West Virginia University in the US is leading a global ...
