Repeating mice experiments not enough to confirm research findings: Experts

Trying to confirm research findings by repeating experiments in mice may be as ineffective as a coin toss, say scientists who claim to have exposed a problem which potentially affects many studies in experimental biomedicine. Scientists at Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and Charite -Universitatsmedizin Berlin in Germany conducted a provocative and seemingly absurd experiment. Instead of repeating an experiment in a mouse model of disease in their laboratory, researchers used a coin toss to confirm whether a drug protects the brain against a stroke, for a study published in the journal PLOS Biology. The researchers said that small sample sizes, often below 10, and almost universally loose thresholds for accepting statistical significance (5 per cent) lead to a high rate of false positive results and an overestimation of true effects. Their study alerts researchers that, contrary to common expectation, replication of a study -- in settings which are common in many laboratories ...

Google takes on 'Africa's challenges' with first AI centre in Ghana

An artificial intelligence research laboratory opened by Google in Ghana, the first of its kind in Africa, will take on challenges across the continent, researchers say. The US technology giant said the lab in the capital Accra would address economic, political and environmental issues. "Africa has many challenges where the use of AI could be beneficial, sometimes even more than in other places," Google's head of AI Accra, Moustapha Cisse, told AFP at the centre's official opening this week. Similar research centres have already opened in cities around the world including Tokyo, Zurich, New York and Paris. The new lab, Cisse said, would use AI to develop solutions in healthcare, education and agriculture -- such as helping to diagnose certain types of crop disease. Cisse, an expert from Senegal, said he hoped specialist engineers and AI researchers would collaborate with local organisations and policymakers. Google is working with universities and start-ups in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya ...

Messenger may be finally coming back to Facebook

Messenger has been one of the troubled Facebook kids and it might be coming back home. The company has been spotted testing the return of Messenger in the main Facebook app.Security researcher Jane Manchun Wong posted screenshots of the upcoming integration in action. The new section, called 'Chats' appears to include only the basic chat functionalities. To give reactions, make a call, send photos, and more, you are still required to open the Messenger app, Fast Company reported.Users will be able to tap the existing Messenger icon in the main app which will lead them directly to the messages without having to launch the dedicated Messenger app.Facebook removed the built-in chat service from the main app in 2014, compelling users to install the dedicated app. However, as the company plans on integrating its messaging services across all its apps, including Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram, it but seems wiser and more convenient to have the Facebook Messenger injected again in the main
