Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), founded by K Chandrashekar Rao on April 27, 2001, is a regional party in Telangana. The party was formed with the agenda of reviving Telangana movement and creating a separate state. TRS formed as an alliance with the Congress party in 2004 Assembly elections. The party bagged 26 seats and also managed to win five Lok Sabha seats.
However, in 2006, KCR withdrew support for UPA government for failing to deliver its electoral promise to create bifurcate Andhra Pradesh. Two years later, TRS MPs and MLAs resigned from their posts after the Congress-led UPA government didn't meet their demand for a separate state in its Budget session. Their withdrawal led to by-polls on May 29, 2008, in which TRS got 7 out of the 16 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats. The result proved to be a significant blow to the party. Finally, after massive protests by students, politicians, and people across Andhra Pradesh, the Union Cabinet approved a Bill, paving way for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Telangana state was formed on June 2, 2014.
That year, Telangana held its first state elections, in which TRS won 63 seats in the 119-member assembly. K Chandrasekhar Rao took oath as its first chief minister. In the Lok Sabha elections 2014, TRS bagged 11 seats, making it the 8th largest party in the Lower House. TRS not only retained its north Telangana stronghold but also made inroads in south Telangana, which was traditionally a Congress bastion. TRS also won three seats in Rajya Sabha. In 2018, KCR dissolved the state Assembly and elections were held in the state. Telangana Rashtra Samithi fielded 105 candidates, out of which 88 won of 119 seats.
The seeds of Telangana struggle were sown in 1955. But KCR led TRS had been instrumental in carrying forth the agitation for the granting of statehood to Telangana.
As of now, TRS enjoys unchallenged popularity, not only because of KCR's role in the creation of Telangana but also because of his government's rigorous approach to creating a massive welfare state.
