BSP Chief Mayawati urges UP govt to help farmers affected by scarce monsoon

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Thursday urged the Uttar Pradesh government to help farmers affected by a weak monsoon this season. "Farmers of Uttar Pradesh are already in distress as they are not getting sugarcane arrears and remunerative prices for their produce. A weak monsoon now has increased their worries even more," the BSP supremo said in a tweet in Hindi. "The government should immediately start helping these farmers to get them out of such a dire situation. This is the demand of the BSP," she said. In another tweet, Mayawati said, "Also, in a state having a huge farmer community like Uttar Pradesh, the latest announcement of spending Rs 192 crores over the next five years, which is only about Rs 38 crores per year, for crop protection and storage appears meagre. Uttar Pradesh govt to conduct survey of unrecognized madrassas across state

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday announced to conduct a survey of unrecognized madrassas in the state to gather information about number of teachers, curriculum, and basic facilities available there, among others. Minister of State for Minority Affairs Danish Azad Ansari said that the state government will conduct the survey as per the requirement of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights in connection with the availability of basic facilities to the students in madrassas. "The survey will begin soon," the minister told PTI. During the survey, details such as name of madrassa and the institution operating it, whether it is running in a private or rented building, number of students studying there, and information regarding facilities of drinking water, furniture, electricity supply and toilet will be collected, Ansari said. Senior IAS officer Sanjay Prasad has been given the additional charge of the Home Department of Uttar Pradesh following the retirement of Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Avnish Awasthi on Wednesday. Prasad, a 1995 batch IAS officer, is currently posted as Principal Secretary to the chief minister and also information department.
