At least 59 'bandits' killed in NW Nigeria: Security sources, resident

At least 59 "bandits" were killed in an attack on villagers in Zamfara state, northwest Nigeria, when civilian militia fought back, security officials and locals told AFP on Thursday. "We killed 59 of the bandits and we lost seven men in the fight which lasted for almost four hours," Bube Shehu, from Danjibga village said of the clashes Wednesday, in an account backed by a military officer in the state.

German film-maker beaten in Rohingya camp in Bangladesh

A German film-maker and his assistant visiting a refugee camp in Bangladesh Thursday were beaten by Rohingya Muslims who suspected they could be human traffickers, police said. The refugees became wary after three Germans and their Bangladeshi assistant started giving gifts to children and women at Kutupalong, the world's largest refugee camp, at Cox's Bazar on the Myanmar border, local police chief Abul Khair told AFP. The Germans, who were not identified, then led led several of the Rohingya towards a car. "One of the Germans and their Bangladeshi fixer were beaten. The army and police had to rescue them," Khair added. "The German needed first aid. He is now fine. RPF increases personnel in Kashmir following Pulwama attack

The Railway Protection Force has increased a company of its personnel in Kashmir following the terror attack in Pulwama to ensure the safety of train passengers and to protect railway property, a senior official of the force said Thursday. Forty CRPF personnel were killed and five injured on February 14 in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir when a Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into their bus in Pulwama district. "We had a meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday where the decision was taken to increase the presence of RPF in the region," said RPF DG Arun Kumar. "The chairman railway board also had a detailed security briefing with all zonal and divisional RPF officers on the security of railways. Govt announces free air travel for paramilitary forces to Kashmir

Personnel of the paramilitary forces deployed in the Kashmir Valley for counter-terror operations have been entitled by the government on Thursday to take commercial flights to either join duty or go on leave, in the wake of the killing of 40 jawans in a deadly attack on their convoy in Pulwama. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order saying it "has approved the entitlement of air travel on Delhi-Srinagar, Srinagar-Delhi, Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Jammu sectors to all the personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)". This includes, the order said, their journey for joining duty, transfer, tour or going on leave. Till now, officers in the rank of Inspectors and above were given this air travel facility. As many as 65,000 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel are deployed in the state as part of 65 battalions apart from units of the Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Central Industrial Security Force, Sashastra Seema Bal and the National Security .

More than 150 IS militants handed over to Iraq from Syria

US-backed Syrian forces fighting the Islamic State group in Syria handed over more than 150 Iraqi members of the group to Iraq, the first batch of several to come, an Iraqi security official said Thursday. The official said the IS militants were handed over to the Iraqi side late Wednesday, and that they were now in a "safe place" and being investigated. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the Kurdish-led Syrian fighters, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, are holding more than 20,000 Iraqis suspected of IS membership in prisons in northern Syria. MP police donate Rs 7.50 crore for Pulwama victims' families

The Madhya Pradesh police Thursday donated Rs 7.50 crore to help the family members of the CRPF jawans, who laid down their lives in the Pulwama terror attack last week. State Director General of Police (DGP) V K Singh handed over a cheque of Rs 7.50 crore to Chief Minister Kamal Nath in the latter's office, a public relation department official said. The police personnel raised the funds from their salary, he said. Forty CRPF jawans died when a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist blew up his explosives-laden vehicle near the paramilitary force's convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on February 14.

Govt empowers Assam Rifles personnel to arrest, search sans warrant

Assam Rifles personnel have been empowered by the central government to arrest anyone and search a place without warrant in northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram. According to a Home Ministry notification, "an officer of the rank corresponding to that of the lowest rank of members of the Assam Rifles" has been given these powers under the Code of Criminal Procedure. Assam Rifles personnel will exercise these powers and discharge their duties "under sub-section(1) of section 41, sections 47, 48, 49, 51, 53, 54, 149, 150, 151 and 152 of the CrPC within the local limits of the area comprised within the border districts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram", the notification said. Section 41 of the CrPC states that any police officer may, without an order from a magistrate and without a warrant, arrest any person. HAL places order with Thales for 2.75-inch rocket launchers to equip Indian armed forces

Seeking to boost tactical capabilities of the Indian armed forces, HAL has awarded French aerospace and defence company Thales a contract to supply 135 2.75-inch (70-mm) rocket launchers. Thales's fully certified, field-proven, competitive rocket launchers are suitable for use on both light and combat helicopters, the company said. As a key differentiator for state-of-the-art helicopters and combat aircraft, they provide an excellent fit with requirements of the Indian armed forces, Thales said. The Indian armed forces are involved in a wide range of deployments in remote theatres, conducting operations beyond the scope of traditional homeland defence for which they need to round out their available resources with a view to boosting their tactical capability, it said. Thales's 2.75-inch (70-mm) rocket launchers are produced using composite material, making them an average of 50 per cent lighter than metal launchers, and eliminating corrosion issues. CRPF jawan injured in encounter with Naxals in Chhattisgarh

A jawan of the CRPF's commando unit CoBRA was injured in an encounter with Naxals in the insurgency-hit Sukma and Bijapur districts ofChhattisgarh Thursday morning, police said. The gun-battle broke out around 10 am in a forest along the border of Sukma and Bijapur districts adjoining Telangana, Sukma Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla told PTI. The area is around 500 km from Raipur. Personnels of state police's Special Task Force, District Reserve Guard, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite unit Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) were carrying out an anti-Naxal operation in the area, Shukla said. A group of Naxals opened fire on one of the CoBRA teams but the rebels fled after a brief gun-battle that ensued, he added. "Constable Bhola Kumar of the CoBRA 201st battalion sustained bullet injuries in his leg. He was being airlifted to Raipur for treatment," the SP said.

Detonator, crude bomb material found in ST bus in Raigad, Maha

A detonator and other material used for making crude bombs was found in a state transport (ST) bus in Raigad district of Maharashtra, the police said Thursday. The material was kept under a seat, said police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kundan Gawde. The conductor, while checking the bus after its last service of the day in Rasayani area Wednesday night, found some suspicious-looking objects under a seat, and alerted local police. The police called a bomb detection and disposal squad which found that there was a detonator alongwith electric wires, shrapnels and batteries. Raigad Police registered a case under the Indian Explosives Act and further probe was on, API Gawde said.

CRPF commando injured in Naxal encounter in Chhattisgarh

A CRPF commando was Thursday injured in an encounter with Naxals in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, officials said. They said the special jungle warfare battalion of the force, CoBRA, and the state police were out for an operation in the Badelanka-Chintalnar axis of the district in south Bastar when two encounters took place with the Maoists. "A CoBRA constable has sustained a bullet injury during the operation and he is being evacuated. More details are awaited," a senior official said. Five TN fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Five Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy Thursday for allegedly fishing in the island nation's waters, a Fisheries department official said here. The fishermen from Jagadapattinam inPudukottai district were fishing near Neduntheevu off the Lankan coast when they were arrested, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Pudukottai, Kumaresan said. They were taken to Kangesanthurai along with their boat, he added. Eight fishermen from Mandapam in Ramanathapuramn district were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly fishing in Sri Lanka's territorial waters, Kumaresan said. Two boats were also seized, he added.
