An intense cold wave gripped the Kashmir Valley on Saturday bringing the minimum temperatures several notches below the freezing point, the weather office said.
The national capital witnessed clear skies on Friday a day after heavy rains and hailstrom lashed the city, with the minimum temperature settling at 7 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average. The maximum temperature was recorded at 20.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below the normal, a Met department official said. The Safdarjung observatory, whose reading is considered the official figure for the city, recorded 4.8mm rainfall and the Palam observatory registered 30.4 mm rainfall till 8.30 am. Relative humidity oscillated between 100 and 56 per cent. The weatherman has forecast moderate foggy conditions on Saturday morning followed by clear skies. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 20 degrees Celsius and 6 degrees Celsius respectively," the MeT office said.
A day after heavy rains lashed Punjab and Haryana, minimum temperatures, which had risen few notches above normal limits for past three days, dropped again on Friday, MeT officials said. Hisar in Haryana was the coldest place in the two states recording a minimum of 4.2 degrees Celsius, a Meteorological (MeT) Department official said here. High altitude areas in the hilly districts of Uttarakhand received fresh snowfall and the lower areas were lashed by rains on Thursday, intensifying cold conditions across the state. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Hemkund Sahib, besides Nanda Devi National Park and skiing destination Auli received fresh snowfall, Met department said. Many areas in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh districts were laid under thick sheets of snow, it said. Lower areas in the hills as well as the plains were simultaneously swept by showers, intensifying the chill, the weatherman said. It has been raining intermittently in Dehradun since Wednesday evening, it said. Schools and colleges in several districts including Chamoli and Rudraprayag remained closed in view of the inclement weather. Widespread rainfall occurred in Himachal Pradesh during the past 24 hours with Chamba being the wettest place in the state, the meteorological department said Thursday. The department has forecast heavy snowfall and rain in the state till Friday. Chamba received 47 mm of rain, followed by 42.8 mm in Dharamshala, 34 mm in Palampur, 25.7 mm in Kangra and 21.6 mm in Una, it said. The department said Manali recorded 14 mm rain and Dalhousie 8 mm. Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state with the minimum temperature recorded at minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, it said. The minimum temperatures in Kalpa was minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, 0.2 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie, zero degrees Celsius in Kufri, 0.4 degrees Celsius in Manali and 4.3 degrees Celsius in Shimla, the MeT department said.

Fresh snowfall hit Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand on Wednesday evening, resulting in the accumulation of about eight-foot thick layer of snow at Kedarnath.
