Manali in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district shivered at minus six degrees Celsius Tuesday while Keylong the administrative centre of the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 8 degrees Celsius. Kalpa in Kinnaur district is usually colder than Manali. But on Tuesday, Manali recorded a low of minus six degrees Celsius, whereas the minimum temperature in Kalpa was minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, Shimla MeT centre Director Manmohan Singh said. In view of life-threatening thunderstorms and lightning during the pre-monsoon season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has decided to implement an end-to-end prediction system for predicting thunderstorms or lightning by April 2019.
The government has decided to add 200 rain gauges in Mumbai and install 100 new automated weather stations in Kerala, Union Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan said Monday. Kerala had witnessed unprecedented rains last year resulting in large-scale flooding and loss of lives and property. On a specific request from the Kerala government, the India Meteorological Department will install new automated weather stations, including rain gauges, to monitor weather activities in the state, the minister said. Vardhan said the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the IMD are developing prediction tools for thunderstorm lightning. The IITM has also developed a mobile App called 'Damini' to give alerts on impending lightning activity over the area. He said the IITM has already installed 48 lightning sensors around the country which can locate the thunderstorm activities on real-time. Last year, over 200 people had died across the north Indian plains due to thunderstorm. He said .

The observation sites are distributed in all four directions within the radius of 5-10 kilometres and are located at the Allahabad University, Delhi Public School, G B Panth Institute of Social Science and Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS).
