Bright day in Kashmir Valley, minimum temp in Srinagar minus 5.8 deg C
The sun shone bright on Kashmir Valley for the second consecutive day Tuesday as the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius, a slight improvement from the previous night's minus 6.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius, down by over a degree, while the nearby Kokernag town registered a minimum temperature of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius Monday night, a drop of three degrees. Drass in Kargil region, the second coldest inhabited place in the world, witnessed a minimum temperature of minus 26.6 degrees Celsius Monday night, a MeT department official said Tuesday. Post snowfall, night temperatures take a dip across Jammu
The night temperatures across Jammu division stayed several degrees below normal after the recent snowfall in the high-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The winter capital of the state recorded a low of 3.5 degrees Celsius, which is over 3 notches below normal, a spokesperson of the meteorological department said. High-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir experienced moderate to heavy snowfall last week, resulting in considerable dip in the mercury. The minimum temperature fell to 3.9 degrees Celsius on Monday against 7.3 degrees Celsius the previous night. Jammu recorded a high of 20.3 degrees Celsius on Monday against 19.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday. In other parts of Jammu region, Bhadarwah town in Doda district emerged as the coldest recorded place with a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius. Manali in HP shivers at minus six deg C
Manali in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district shivered at minus six degrees Celsius Tuesday while Keylong the administrative centre of the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 8 degrees Celsius. Kalpa in Kinnaur district is usually colder than Manali. But on Tuesday, Manali recorded a low of minus six degrees Celsius, whereas the minimum temperature in Kalpa was minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, Shimla MeT centre Director Manmohan Singh said. Kufri in Shimla district experienced cold wave conditions while the minimum temperature at Dalhousie in Chamba district was 1.7 degrees Celsius, he said. The minimum temperatures in Shimla and Palampur were 4 degrees Celsius and 2 degrees Celsius respectively, Singh said.

After three consecutive days of snowfall and rain, Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday got some relief, but the cold continued to grip the hills, said an official.
13 trains delayed as dense fog engulfs Delhi
As many as 13 trains coming into Delhi were delayed as thick fog engulfed the national capital and its surrounding areas on Tuesday.According to IMD, the minimum temperature was recorded at 6 degrees Celsius while the maximum will hover around 19 degrees Celsius. In the coming week, the minimum temperature is likely to range between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius.The IMD also predicted rainfall starting January 20.In addition to the extreme weather conditions, air quality continued to remain poor.According to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 283 till 9:45 am, which falls in the 'poor' category.AQI in the range of 51 to 100 is considered as satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 falls under the category of poor, 300-400 is considered 'very poor' and 401-500 falls under the 'hazardous' category.

Delhiites woke up to a cold morning with the minimum temperature settling at 7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. As many as 13 trains were running late due to fog, officials said. According to a meteorological department official, humidity was recorded at 92 per cent. "The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 19 degrees celsius," the weatherman said. On Saturday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 19.5 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius respectively.

Government to launch system for predicting thunderstorms
In view of life-threatening thunderstorms and lightning during the pre-monsoon season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has decided to implement an end-to-end prediction system for predicting thunderstorms or lightning by April 2019.
Mumbai to get 200 rain gauges, new automated weather stations to be installed in Kerala: Vardhan
The government has decided to add 200 rain gauges in Mumbai and install 100 new automated weather stations in Kerala, Union Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan said Monday. Kerala had witnessed unprecedented rains last year resulting in large-scale flooding and loss of lives and property. On a specific request from the Kerala government, the India Meteorological Department will install new automated weather stations, including rain gauges, to monitor weather activities in the state, the minister said. Vardhan said the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the IMD are developing prediction tools for thunderstorm lightning. The IITM has also developed a mobile App called 'Damini' to give alerts on impending lightning activity over the area. He said the IITM has already installed 48 lightning sensors around the country which can locate the thunderstorm activities on real-time. Last year, over 200 people had died across the north Indian plains due to thunderstorm. He said .
Max temp plunges to 19.5 degrees Celsius in Delhi
It was a cold and breezy day in the national capital with the maximum temperature plunging to 19.5 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the normal, said a Met department official. The humidity oscillated between 95 and 41 per cent. The Met office has forecast partly cloudy skies along with mist and shallow fog in the morning and haze and smoke thereafter for Tuesday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 19 and 6 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. On Sunday, the maximum and minimum temperatures settled at 23.5 and 8.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

Automatic weather stations, mobile app for Kumbh Mela launched
Union Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan Monday launched a special weather service for the Kumbh Mela, which includes setting up of four automatic weather stations (AWS). The purpose of this service is to provide information of the prevailing weather and forecasts for the next three days, Vardhan said. Four AWS have been installed at four different locations in Allahabad and made them operational. The observation sites are distributed in all four directions within the radius of 5-10 kilometres and are located at the Allahabad University, Delhi Public School, G B Panth Institute of Social Science and Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS). A mobile app named 'KumbhMela Weather Service' has also been developed to disseminate the live weather information on temperature, humidity, rainfall and winds. Sunny Monday in Kashmir amid cold conditions
The valley witnessed a sunny morning Monday despite cold conditions being intensified in Kashmir and Ladakh region with a sharp drop in the minimum temperature at night, officials said. Kargil was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir at a low of minus 18.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Leh at a low of minus 16.2 degrees Celsius, the weather office said. The minimum temperature in Srinagar plummeted six degrees on Sunday night and settled at minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, an official said. Cold wave sweeps across Punjab, Haryana
Cold wave swept across Punjab and Haryana on Monday with Adampur being the coldest place in the region with a minimum of 1.7 degrees Celsius. In several parts of both states, minimum temperatures dropped a few degrees below normal. The Union Territory of Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, braved cold weather at 5.3degreesCelsius, an official of the MeT department said. Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala experienced cold weather conditions at 2, 5.3 and 5.1degrees Celsius respectively. Pathankot, Halwara, Gurdaspur, Bathinda and Faridkot recorded their respective lows at 3, 2.6, 5.4, 2.7 and 3.9 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal recorded their respective minimums at 6.8, 5 and 4.6degrees Celsius respectively, up to two notches below normal. Rohtak, Narnaul and Bhiwani recorded their minimums at 7.6, 6 and 5.7 degrees Celsius.

Delhi: Cold wave intensifies, air quality 'very poor'
The overall air quality index (AQI) deteriorated to 'very poor' category here on Monday as a thick blanket of fog descended over the national capital.Delhi's AQI was docking at 386 in the morning, according to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).As per India Meteorological Department (MeT), the minimum temperature in Delhi will be 7 degree Celsius while maximum temperature is expected to hover around 20 degree Celsius.The wind speed in Delhi will be 9 km/hr and the humidity will oscillate between 70 per cent and 77 per cent.Fog lowered visibility in the national capital and surrounding areas, due to which as many as 12 trains are running late.Inadequate nutrition and exposure to cold wave have forced the homeless in Delhi to seek refuge in night shelters.While the national capital region is reeling under the intense cold wave, fresh snowfall was witnessed in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.Snow clearing operations are currently underway in Rajouri district.
Manali shivers at minus 5 deg C after fresh snowfall
Himachal Pradesh's famed tourist place Manali in Kullu district witnessed a fresh spell of snow, taking the temperature to minus five degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said. The tourist place witnessed 2 cm more snowfall from 5.30 pm on Sunday till 8.30 am on Monday, Shimla MeT centre director Manmohan Singh said. Other tourist destinations of the hill state like Kufri in Shimla district and Dalhousie in Chamba district also saw acute cold wave conditions at freezing point. The minimum temperature at Kufri and Dalhousie remained minus 2.9 and 0 degree Celsius, respectively, he said. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 12 degrees Celsius, the official said, adding the minimum temperature in another tribal district Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 8.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in state capital Shimla and Palampur was 1 degree Celsius each, Singh added.
