Infant death: MS transferred, nurses to be charge sheeted

In its report, the five-member committee constituted by the Punjab government to look into the causes of death of then infant girl held the Medical Superintendent Iqbal Singh and three staff nurses and an emergency medical officer guilty of negligence and recommended transfer of Singh.

Subsequently, he had been transferred, an official spokesman said here today.

The report also submitted that three staff nurses and one medical emergency officer be chargesheeted for negligence in performing their duties, the spokesman said.

In order to prevent recurrence of such unfortunate event and to improve the child care in the state, the report recommended that 12 special new-born care units will be established during the year 2012-13 in hospitals.

 

Besides, 50 new born stabilisation units will also be set up in all the District Hospitals, Sub-Divisional Hospitals and Community Health Centres to provide specialised care to the new born, the spokesman said quoting the report.

On July 26, the infant girl had died in civil hospital after which her father Sanjeev Kumar alleged that medical staff of the civil hospital removed his five-day-old daughter from life support system as he failed to pay Rs 200 as charges.

"My wife Anita gave birth to a girl child in civil hospital on July 21. The child was detected with jaundice and later shifted to emergency ward on life support system," Sanjeev had said.

"Nurses told me to deposit two hundred rupees as its charge. I was unable to pay the money. Later, they removed my daughter from the system that resulted in her death last night," he had claimed.
