Edutech in talks with Andhra varsities

BS Reporter Chennai/ Hyderabad
Chennai-headquartered Edutech India Private Limited, a provider of technology-based learning and assessment solutions, is negotiating with four universities in Andhra Pradesh for its computer-based English language practical examination.

"We have made presentations to Osmania, Kakatiya, Krishna Devaraya and SV universities for our computer-based English language proficiency practical test. Negotiations with these universities are in final stages and we expect them to reach fruition by 2008," LS Venkatesh, general manager, Edutech, told Business Standard on Tuesday.

Edutech has partnered Andhra University to provide English practical assessment to its first-year and second-year undergraduate students from colleges in the five districts of East Godavari, West Godavari, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram.

"Last year, over 54,000 first-year undergraduate students studying in 384 colleges affiliated to Andhra University took the test, and the number doubled to about one lakh this year. We expect over 1.6 lakh students to take this test in 2008," Venkatesh said.

Based on QuestionMark Corporation's 'Perception' software platform, the English language practical assessment is designed to test students' skills in accuracy, fluency and listening comprehension. Out of a total of 50 marks of the practical component, 40 marks are allotted to the computer-based assessment and the remaining 10 for internal records.

"Communication skills in English contributing directly to the employability of the candidate is the skill mentioned most often by employers as the fundamental requirement. Students need to improve their communication skills to maintain an edge over others in this competitive job market. Edutech's practical examination is intended to prepare students to meet real world uses and professional challenges with confidence," Venkatesh said.
