GCMMF to expand distribution network in six months

Milk co-operative targets to be a Rs 12,000 crore brand by next year

Amongst the Asia's largest milk co-operative, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) selling dairy products under the brand 'Amul' today said it will expand its the distribution network to 3,000 towns over next six months from 1,000, as it targets to be a Rs 12,000 crore brand by next year.

"We will appoint 200 super distributors over next six months period in remote towns of India so as to expand our network to 3,000 towns," said R S Sodhi, Managing Director, GCMMF.

"Our dry product range will first be introduced through this channel, and later on other products will also be made available there. Each super distributor shall cover 50 sub dealers," he said.

 

Amul currently has presence in all the major cities covering around 1,000 towns, across the country.

"So far we have a strong presence in all the major cities beginning from J&K to Kerala. The idea is to now reach the smaller towns having population between 5,000 to 10,000 people," Sodhi said.

The provisional turnover of the federation by March ending this year stood at Rs 9,780 crore up from Rs 8,006 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, a jump of 22 per cent. "We aim to be a Rs 12,000 crore brand by next year," Sodhi said.

"Our major dairy products have registered a double digit growth in volume terms, while Amul Spray Infant milk food brand has now become a Rs 1,000 crore brand," he said.

"Our milk procurement has grown by around three per cent this year. As per the provisional figures, the average milk procurement this year was nearly 96 lakh kg per day up from 93 lakh kg per day in the year ago period," said Sodhi.

The federation's milk procurement has risen nearly by 6-7 per cent as it has begun purchasing milk from states like Maharashtra, Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.

"We are procuring 7-8 lakh litres of milk daily from outside Gujarat for over last six months," a GCMMF official said.

GCMMF has network of 13 district cooperatives, engaging 29 lakh dairy farmers spanning 12,000 villages of Gujarat.
