BUSINESS STANDARD

Nripjit Singh 'Noni' Chawla has resigned as managing director of Max Healthcare, a division of the Analjit Singh-promoted Max India Ltd. His resignation was accepted by the Max India board at its meeting held here today.

However, Noni Chawla will continue to serve on the Max India board as a non-executive director.

According to Max India chairman Analjit Singh, Noni Chawla should continue to serve on the Max Healthcare board once the division is spun off into a separate company. Noni Chawla will also act as a consultant to Analjit Singh for setting up a medical school and a nursing school, recruiting physicians and surgeons, marketing, project development, Max Foundation etc.

Analjit Singh will now assume the role of Max Healthcare chief executive. "The healthcare business is very close to my heart. As I have other businesses also, I will strengthen the core team at Max Healthcare," Analjit Singh said.

Commenting on his decision to leave, Noni Chawla said: "We have been talking about this arrangement for over two months. Besides helping out on these issues, I plan to pursue some private interests. I plan to go back to teaching and writing."

Analjit Singh added: "Noni has built a very fine institution with which he has been closely involved since inception. I am looking forward to his continued contribution to the success of Max Healthcare."

Noni Chawla joined Max India two-and-a-half years ago as chief executive, healthcare. Last year, he was appointed managing director, Max Healthcare. Before joining Max India, Noni Chawla was with Korn Ferry, a head hunting firm.

Noni Chawla was also associated with Max India's foray into clinical research, including the acquisition done by the company in Costa Rica. "I hope in his new role he is able to do for our healthcare business what he did for the clinical research business," Analjit Singh said.

Max Healthcare has four Dr Max clinics, with one Dr Max medical centre in Delhi. Two more are expected to come up by January 2002. It is also planning a large hospital at Gurgaon, though it has not decided whether it will be a general hospital or a specialty hospital. "We expect to arrive at a decision by December 31, 2001," Analjit Singh said.
