Rourkela Steel record in converter lining life

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP)’s Steel Melting Shop - II has set a new benchmark in converter lining life. Converter-A of the Shop was declared down this morning after recording a lining life of 5477, which is the highest ever in the history of the steel plant.
The earlier record was of 4545 heats created in May 2008. This achievement has also elevated RSP to the elite club of steel plants in India having an average lining life of more than 5000 heats.
Another significance of this feat is that SMS-II has achieved such a high lining life without the use of any additional refractory material in the form of gunniting or fettling. This sterling success has been made possible due to the combined efforts of operations, electrical and mechanical wings of SMS-II as well as refractory engineering department, instrumentation and tonnage oxygen plants. The bricks were supplied by the steel plant’s lime and dolomite brick plant.
