BS Reporter Chennai/ Visakhapatnam

Visakha Container Terminal Private Limited (VCTPL) is buying cranes from Finland-based Kone Cranes as part of its Phase II expansion.

The company signed an agreement with Kone for supply of two rail mounted quay cranes, also known as ship-to-shore cranes, here on Saturday. The total investment would be about Rs 120 crore.

The terminal recently also signed another agreement with Kone for supply of four rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGSs), a company release said.

The cranes would be supplied in the next 16 months. The RTGSs will have a lifting capacity of 41-tonne. These cranes will be erected and commissioned at the terminal site. The new additions would enhance the terminal capacity to 300,000 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units).

Meanwhile, Maersk Line has announced a weekly service link from Visakhapatnam to China. The port rotation for this service will be Shanghai-Yantian-Tanjung Pelepas-Port Klang-Chennai-Visakhapatnam-Tanjung Pelepas-Shanghai. The distance between Shanghai and Visakhapatnam will be covered in 15 days. The first call at Visakhapatnam is expected on September 29. The service will also be extended to Kolkata/Haldia by transshipping the boxes at Vizag. Container movements between Kolkata/Haldia and Vizag will be through feeder vessels.
