BS Reporter Chennai/ Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh government proposes to develop a ‘Media City’ that will serve as an epicentre of research and development and production of gaming-related technology in the country.

The proposed media city will be spread over 30 acres and will be in line with international media cities in Manchester, Montreal and Dubai, according to state information technology and communication minister, Ponnala Lashmaiah.

The minister stated in a press release on Thursday that the media city, to be set up in Raidurg in Rangreddy district, would have academic institutions and an incubation centre where ‘walk to work’ and ‘plug and play’ built-up office space would be provided to the first generation technocrat entrepreneurs.

“We are in the process of initiating the expression of interest from various consultants for design and development of media city,” he said, adding the most valuable part of the proposed city would be to serve as a spring board for development of an entertainment technology-based eco system.

The state government is also planning to launch a website and had announced setting up of a committee for promotion of animation and gaming industry.

The minister said the current market for animation development in the country was estimated at $1 billion. It was expected to witness a combined annual growth rate of 35.1 per cent between 2011 and 2015.
