Ariyaratne Awarded

A T Ariyaratne was yesterday presented the prestigious Gandhi Peace Prize for 1996 by President S D Sharma. Conferring the award, Sharma said he had shown timeless relevance of Bapu's philosophy of sarvodaya. B P Singh, secretary, department of culture, said the implication of conferring the prize was that India would like the new year to be a year of peace and harmony.
