Call for restoration of ecosystem to get Hyd tag

The Conference of Parties (COP 11) to the global Biodiversity Convention (CBD) starting here Monday would make the name of its host city a part of yet another call for restoration of natural ecosystem.
Sarath Gidda of CBD secretariat on Saturday said several international organisations are coming together on October 17 to make a ‘Hyderabad Call’, an international appeal asking for concerted efforts to restore the ecosystem worldwide.
India was one of the early signatories to the CBD during the 90s when PV Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister. Hyderabad Call will be a fitting tribute to this legacy as Rao hails from Andhra Pradesh, he said.
After the meeting of parties (MOP) coming to a close on Friday, the COP will meet from October 8-19 to discuss among other things, a strategy to implement various protocols formulated at the earlier meetings besides the ocean biodiversity and the issues arising out of seabed mining.
The CBD had set out to achieve 20 biodiversity targets agreed at the Nagoya convention (Japan) held two years ago by 2020. These include making the biodiversity a part of the national endeavours like development and poverty reduction.
The next biennial meeting will hold a mid-term review of the progress being made with regard to these targets, according to David Cooper, another senior official of CBD.
Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, executive secretary of CBD, said financial resources were an important tool to achieve these goals and access to resources would be linked to the action plans prepared to achieve these goals.
