Chhattisgarh police foils BJP's CM gherao programme

The administrative officials said that the official figure of Congress activists arrested did not exceed 8,000

BS Reporter Kolkata/ Raipur

Heavy police bandobast on Tuesday foiled Congress workers move to gherao Chhattisgarh chief minister’s house in protest against allegedly favouring a BJP leader’s firm in allotting a coal mine in the state.

The opposition show against the ruling BJP however failed to leave any imprint following low turnout on the streets that in fact remained chocked due to barricades put by the police. Before the Congress workers could gherao the chief minister’s house on Tuesday, police had circled strong barricades on the roads leading to Raman Singh’s official residence.

The Congress leaders had earlier claimed that more than 50,000 workers would gather in the capital city and march towards CM house from different corners. The administrative officials said that the official figure of Congress activists arrested did not exceed 8000.

The simmering differences between the Congress top leaders in Chhattisgarh were cited as possible reason for the poor show. The fight was against the BJP government and Raman Singh. But it remained confined to the internal feud between different warring group of Congress.
