Congress May Replace Deshmukh In Maharashtra

Our Political Bureau BUSINESS STANDARD

Taking a cue from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which scored an impressive victory after changing the leader in Gujarat, the Congress leadership is all set to effect organisational changes in major Congress-ruled states to neutralize the anti-incumbency factor and project a new leadership in these states.

Though the issue was not discussed at the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Sunday, senior party leaders are believed to have taken up the issue during their one-to-one meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

The major cause of worry for the party leadership is Maharashtra which will go to polls at the end of the year.

The central party leadership is worried over the performance of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Congress strategists feel the party will be decimated if Deshmukh led the poll campaign.
