Govt announces Rs 50 lakh relief package

With monsoon claiming the lives of 43 persons and causing extensive damage to properties in the state, the Karnataka government has announced an interim relief package of Rs 50 lakh.
 
The families of each of the dead person will receive a monetary grant of Rs 1 lakh. The compensation for loss of property and livestock will be decided after the deputy commissioners submit their reports.
 
The relief package was evolved at a meeting chaired by Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy.
 
"According to preliminary reports, more than 250 livestock have died and 1,000 houses have been damaged by rains. The deputy commissioners will submit their reports in three days. We will work out the compensation package per family subsequently," Kumaraswamy told reporters after the meeting.
 
The worst affected districts include Raichur, Bijapur, Bagalkote, Gulbarga, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada.
 
The state will seek financial assistance from the Centre for rain relief work, he added.
