If I were the FM - Jassi Walia

RUN UP TO THE BUDGET 2004-05

Soumik Sen New Delhi

Reduce taxes, increase interest rates

The Budget brings with it a bagload of expectations for most Indians, but the most vocal among them is the middle-class aspirant, best exemplified by the screen character Jassi Walia in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. Jassi is played by actress Mona Singh.

Here, Singh chooses to playact as India's finance minister in her television avataar of Jassi because, according to so many Indians, her's is the voice of the striving, unheard India.

"Laxman's daily cartoons are effective satires on the wants and needs of the common man," says Singh.

"I personally feel that while it is a difficult task to meet the needs of each and every citizen of this country, small beginnings could go a long way in boosting our economy. After all, it is every individual that makes this nation what it is." Over to Jassi.

"Inflation is a cause of major worry for most housewives, including my mother and Bebe, who're sure that the prices of household necessities are definitely going up.

My Bebe's biggest fear is the rise in the price of cooking gas that will impact her entire household budget. My Budget would, therefore, check the inflationary trend.

"On the other hand, issues of health need to be addressed right away. This could be done by reducing the price of life-saving drugs, thereby making healthcare more affordable for the common man.

Issues like pension for retired employees needs a serious re-look. I know how this can impact families because I have seen my Papaji struggle to receive the pension rightfully due to him. Senior citizens should also get better tax options.

"Though Armaan Sir has gifted me a Maruti car, I am hurt by the ever-increasing fuel price. I completely understand the international hike in oil prices, yet like any common person, I'd hope to ensure a downfall in the price of fuel. I'd work to improve road infrastructure.

"Finally, I would reduce tax on salaried employees like me, so that there is more disposable income. I would also increase the tax exemption limit. I'd help Papaji by increasing interest rates on small savings. I'd like to give the salaried class reason to smile.
