New Mangalore port handles record traffic

The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has handled 17,290 TEU's of container traffic for the year-ended 2006-07. The present year's container traffic up to January 2008 has already crossed the 17,516 TEU mark.

The general cargo traffic also got a shot in the arm at the NMPT with handling of the first consignment of maize for export to Dubai.

According to P Tamilvannan, Chairman, NMPT, the increase in the Cargo Traffic could be attributed to the hectic business development drive followed by the port coupled with addition to the infrastructure. The port has also handled 4.9 million tonnes of rail bound traffic during this fiscal.
