NID Bangalore launches new PG courses in design

Meera Vankipuram Chennai/ Bangalore
Ahmedabad-based National Institute of Design (NID) has launched two PG diploma programmes in design and retail at its Bangalore R&D campus.

While the PG programme in 'Design For Retail Experience' will have an intake of 15 students, the programme in 'Design For Digital Experience' will admit 10 students.

The duration of both the courses, set to commence this academic year, is two years. "The students from the current batch will be awarded a diploma. As and when we gain University status, which we have applied for, we will award degrees," Institute director Darlie O Koshy said.

The Retail Experience programme will help students design products, systems and spaces for a multi-sensory experience in retail and visual merchandising.

The Digital Experience course will focus on human experience in the context of designing products such as handheld devices, information kiosks and such others.

"Both courses will be in the context of user experience and analyse user behaviour and consumption patterns as well," Koshy said.

The Bangalore campus may also offer continuing education and executive development programmes in animation design, design for manufacturing and design innovation, in the near future. Research plans include e-learning projects, design for health, inclusive design and game design.

"We are also in preliminary discussions with IIM-Bangalore to set up a strategic design management course in the next few years," he added.

Inaugurated in March 2006, NID's Bangalore campus has contributed to a number of projects in the state such as the interior design of the Vikasa Soudha, design of several Raita Sampark Kendras, Aeronautical Development Agency, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and other sensitive government projects apart from forging ties with several top global corporations.
