Parliament to have fool-proof security

Press Trust of India New Delhi

Parliament could soon have scanners to check body, vehicle and baggage if a proposal aimed at providing fool-proof security in the complex gets the nod of the authorities.

A proposal in this regard was there before the earlier Committee on Security to introduce body scanners and some demonstrations were also held.

Officials said there was a need for such devices to make Parliament safe in view of the current situation and it was up to the Committee to take a fresh look at this.

A detailed presentation on the security in the complex was made before the Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar earlier this week after the Committee on Security was reconstituted.

Deputy Speaker Karia Munda is the Chairman of the reconstituted committee which would go into issues like what steps needed to be taken to beef up security.

Observing that body scanners were in use in some countries, Parliament sources said the technical committee would have to visit some western nations like United States and France to see for itself how such devices function.

A decision about undertaking a visit by experts to foreign countries would be taken by the technical committee, they said, disputing suggestions that the body scanners affected the privacy of persons.
