Radiation level at Kaiga not high: Director

Site director, Kaiga nuclear power plant, J P Gupta, has denied that the radiation levels around the Kaiga site is high and said it was much below the prescribed levels of international agencies.
Gupta refused to react to MP Anant Kumar Hegde’s allegation that cancer cases in and around the Kaiga site increased alarmingly. He also denied the MP’s allegation that the third reactor of the Kaiga nuclear station is unsafe. He added that the third reactor was shut down for minor technical work and it would resume operations soon.
Gupta stressed that all reactors are safe and there is no reason for any worry.
Meanwhile, Raveendra Shetty, secretary, Uttara Kannada District Environmental Protection Committee, and Ganapati Bislakoppa of the Vruksha-Laksha Andolana alleged that repeated mishaps at the Kaiga nuclear station were causing deep concern among residents of the region.
They told reporters in Karwar on Tuesday that Sri Gangadharendra Saraswathi Swamiji of Sonda-Swarnavalli Math will preside over a meeting at Sirsi this Saturday to discuss the developments and press for a health survey in areas around the power plant.
Environmentalists, scientists and members of the public will participate in the meet arranged by the Nagarika Parisheelana Sameeti. They said the Kaiga plant was commissioned despite opposition from people and environmentalists.
