Trinamool activists ransack WBIDC office

Press Trust of India Kolkata
Situation remained under control today in Nandigram, which had witnessed mob violence yesterday.

Over a dozen policemen were injured when locals objecting to the acquisition of land for Salim group's proposed special economic zone (SEZ) in East Midnapore district clashed with the police.

Police also recovered the rifle allegedly snatched during the disturbances, Inspector-General of Police Raj Kanoria said here today. No arrest, however, could be made, he added.

A police picket was posted at Kalicharanpur and its neighbouring villages of Nandigram bloc in the district as a precautionary measure.

The violence was sparked off yesterday over a reported notification of land acquisition for an SEZ by the Salim group of Indonesia. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya, however, clarified that no such notification was issued for the area.

A police vehicle was set on fire, local gram panchayat office ransacked and 15 policemen were injured in brickbatting by thousands of activists of the Trinamool Congress-led Krishi Jami Bachao Committee (Save farmland Committee).
