Farm Goods Prices Likely To Go Up Globally

BUSINESS STANDARD

The international prices of agricultural commodities are approaching the bottom of the price cycle and are likely to start looking up soon, according to an international agriculture trade analyst.

The analysis of global price volatility in past 50 years indicates that the recent price levels do not conform to the long term trend and, therefore, seem to be approaching the bottom of the price cycle. If the long-term trend is adhered to, the prices should start looking up around 2001-02.

This is the conclusion of a study done by National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research (NCAP) principal scientist Ramesh Chand for a committee appointed by the Punjab government to probe into the impact of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on agriculture.

It took into account the price behaviour of selected agricultural commodities since 1950, using mainly the nominal price series expressed in US dollars.
