Mentha oil set to spurt on traders` strike in UP

COMMODITY SPIKES

BS Reporter Mumbai

Prices of mentha oil have slipped marginally during last week to Rs 448 per kg from Rs 456. Surprisingly, the commodity was hovering above Rs 527 per kg on export demand.

Mentha traders have completely paralysed its trading across Uttar Pradesh to protest the state government's decision to impose 2.5 per cent mandi tax. Booking came to a standstill. To add fuel to fire, the state government has levied the tax with a retrospective effect of January 2004 which may drive many traders out of the business.

The traders' strike just ahead of the arrival of new mentha crop has added to the woes of farmers. Exports of the commodity have also been affected by the agitation.

Mentha traders and farmers jointly staged a demonstration in Bareilly to oppose the state government's levy. A similar demonstration was also held at the Bilaspur market in the Rampur janpad.
