Police fired water cannons and baton charged pro-Congress workers on who were protesting against the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Chouhan had called for a state-wide strike against the Congress-led government's decision of not providing special relief packages to farmers affected by unexpected rain and hailstorm.
But protesters said that the state government was using the farmers for their own political gain.
"The government which claims to be pro-farmers and apparently regards farmers as supreme, the same government is milking them for their own purpose," said the State Vice President of Congress, Manak Agarwal.
Heavy rains on February 26 had led to fatalities and caused extensive damage to crops and property in rural areas.

Chouhan announced a compensation package for the affected farmers and monetary relief for the families of farmers who had died.
He appealed to the central government to provide aid to the affected people, and to form schemes to protect further victims in the future.
