Even though his designation as President of India formally puts him outside the boundaries of party politics, politicians are still an essential part of Pranab Mukherjee’s life. Just as the former Congressman was having a leisurely chat with the guests after a performance by Shubha Mudgal, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav – now a significant element for the ruling coalition – was seen rushing across for a tête-à-tête with the president.
