Rear-view mirrors appear to have become popular in the slowdown-hit automobile industry. Mahindra & Mahindra has been advertising its scooter range, showing a sturdy Bolero in the rear-view mirror — the idea being to link its two-wheelers, which had a troubled debut, with the reliability of its vehicles. More recently, a senior Maruti executive employed the analogy of the rear-view mirror, though for different reasons. Pressed about the company’s falling market share, the chief operating officer of sales and marketing quipped, “We see competition in the rear-view mirror.”
