Ahmedabad remembers 2008 bomb blasts victims

More then 3,000 people, including school children, got together for a candle-light vigil near Civil Hospital here, where the maximum number of people had died when a bomb exploded at the trauma centre.

"People who attended the vigil also included family members of victims," said Sanjay Patel of Asarva Youth Circle, who had organized the vigil.

Twenty blasts rocked the city on July 26, 2008 within a span of few hours. At the end of the day, death toll had reached 57.

The following day, 22 bombs were found planted across the city of Surat.

State crime branch, which made quick arrests, said Indian Mujaheedin (IM) was behind the blasts.

 

The trial resumed this month after the Supreme Court vacated a stay to the court proceedings. Additional principal sessions judge Jyotsana Yagnik is conducting the trial against 68 accused on a daily basis inside Sabarmati Central Jail.

Twenty-four accused are still absconding, including Riyaz Bhatkal and Mufti Sufiyan Patangia.
