"Hurt" over alleged desecration of a holy book in his constituency, Punjab Congress MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki today resigned from the Assembly.
"I am a Sikh...I am hurt with the present situation, especially incident of sacrilege of the holy book in my area," he said in his resignation letter sent to Punjab Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal.
Sikki is MLA from Khadoor Sahib assembly seat in Tarn Taran district of Punjab.
However, the Punjab Speaker's office is yet to receive the letter, the assembly spokesman said.
On October 16, at village Batt in Tarn Taran district, pages of holy book were allegedly found torn and scattered at the village Gurdwara, where the chain of recitation of Guru Granth Sahib was going on, police said.
"In the light of recent incidents of sacrilege and the current scenario, I find myself in profound pain as unable to do anything in this regard. A particular incident in Batt village which fell in my constituency, left deep scars on my heart", the letter added.
"Under such circumstances, I don't wish to be a part of this 'Jhoothi sarkar' (a government of lies) as well as Vidhan Sabha. Being a true and devoted Sikh,... Understood my moral responsibilities, hence quit my Assembly seat. Kindly accept my resignation", he wrote.
Already, around ten Shiromani Gurudwara Prbandhak Committee (SGPC) members have resigned from the general House of the Sikh religious body over the "sacrilege" incidents in the state.
