Police official among 10 killed in Karachi

At least 10 people, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), were killed in separate incidents of violence across Pakistan's biggest city today. ASI Zulfiqar Ali was shot dead by unknown assailants while returning home in Sherpao colony in Landhi. In another incident, gunmen barged into an estate agent's office in Ahsanabad killing three people on the spot and injuring two others. Police said they were investigating the killings. A trader was also gunned down and his guard injured in Bantwagali of Joria Bazar located in Old City Area. Police said that the trader had been getting death threats after refusing to pay extortionists. Unknown assailants also gunned down one person and injured his friend near the Karachi Zoo in Garden area while two others were injured in firing outside the offices of a leading media group near Gurumandir on M.A Jinnah road. Meanwhile, a body was recovered from garbage dump in Abbas Town area located on Abul Hassan Ispahani Road. Police said they had also recovered two bodies from the Sohrab Goth area. In a separate incident, a man identified as Umar was also killed near a warehouse in Bin Qasim area. According to official reports, 1,100 people fell victims to violence and target killings in Pakistan's financial hub in 2011 but the figure rose to 2,300 in 2012. Meanwhile, the CID claimed to have arrested three activists of the Tehreek-e-Taliban who were responsible for the killing of six workers of the anti-polio vaccine campaign in the city in December. The CID said Abdul Rehman and two of his associates were arrested from the Mangophir area on Monday and were involved in carrying out the attacks on the anti-polio campaign workers. It also recovered 10 kilograms of explosives from the TTP activists.
