`Individualised Disease Solutions To Be The Key'

Gauri Kamath BSCAL

It was a lacklustre day on the bourses perked up only by bouts of purchases by foreign institutional investors (FIIs). According to players, the charm of cyclicals has worn off, what with the companies declaring results well

below expectation.

The Sensex closed at 4,603.42 points, a gain of 5.24 points over its previous close of 4,598.18 points. The S&P CNX Nifty closed at 1,325.70 points up 5.60 points over Wednesday's close of 1,320.10 points. Players said that the market remained steady on the back of FII buying in software stocks and ACC, HLL and MTNL.

Satyam Computers was the most actively traded stock on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) with a turnover of Rs 402.90 crore, followed by Pentafour Software and Ranbaxy. ACC was among the major gainers on the bourse, rising 5.23 per cent to close at Rs 214.30. On the BSE too, Satyam dominated with a turnover of Rs 288.87 crore.

Broader picture

The CNX Nifty Junior closed at 2,242.60 points, down 10.20 points, which goes to show that it was just a few stocks which held up the market. The S&P CNX 500, the most broadbased of the NSE indices, registered a loss of 0.90 points to close at 912.30 points. The CNX Midcap 200 index too was down 7.50 points to close at 783.55 points. The BSE-100 index was down 3.11 points and closed at 2014.70 points.

The volumes were high as well, with NSE clocking a turnover of Rs 2,968.33 crore and BSE not too far behind at Rs 2,137.77 crore. The number of trades on the NSE were also high at 3,56,133. There was not much to differentiate between the advances and declines. There were 537 advances as against 533 declines with 62 scrips remaining unchanged.
