The Braithwaite Burn & Jessop (BBJ) Construction Company Ltd has formed a joint venture consortium with Marubeni of Japan, Besix of Belgium, Gammon India and Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation to bid for a Rs 230-crore project to construct six flyovers in Calcutta.

Sources in BBJ, which is one of the few profit-making companies under the Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Ltd (BBUNL) stable, feel confident that with the newly formed consortium, the flyover project is well within grasp. The consortium has already submitted its prequalification bids to Yachiyo Engineering Company of Japan, consultant to the government of West Bengal. The bids for the project will be submitted sometime between June and July .

The flyover project, which is a government of West Bengal project, executed through the Hooghly River Bridge Commission, is divided into three packages. The first package, which is worth Rs 60 crore, involves building three flyovers, one in Park Street and two in Lockgate Road and Mallick Bazaar.

The second package worth Rs 30 crore involves building a flyover in Gariahat, and also some road work in the Shyam Bazaar and Maniktala area. The third package worth Rs 140 crore involves the construction of two flyovers, one in Maniktala, and the other from Beckbagan to Rabindrasadan.

Though the state government has assessed the project cost at Rs 230 crore, BBJ sources said it may well end up being much higher. The project will be financed by the Overseas Economic Corporation Fund (OECF).

BBJ has, in its record, a number of engineering landmarks spread across the globe. Its recent achievement is the second Hooghly Bridge. The company has also nearly finished constructing a 2.3-kilometre rail-cum-road bridge, the Narayan Setu, over Brahmaputra. The bridge is expected to be ready by March this year. The company has a tie-up with Frederick Harris of Holland and Inco of Spain in the area of port construction.

BBJ has also diversified into fabrication and erection of steel work in industrial workshops, steel plant buildings and multi-storeyed office buildings. Apart from building new bridges, the company also undertook successfully restoration work of existing bridges.
