Cardamom Continues To Get Good Quotes At New Centres

Cardamom continued to fetch good prices in non-traditional auction centres like Mumbai and New Delhi even as the overall average price for the season (August 1997-July 1998) declined sharply against the returns during the last season.
Mumbai auction fetched an average price of Rs 269.32 a kg while Delhi's average price was Rs 248.60.
Overall, Mumbai's average price for the season has been Rs 297.22 a kg and that of New Delhi has been Rs 260.14.

In contrast, the all India average price was Rs 249.01 a kg against last season's price of Rs 400.28 a kg.
The price decline has been despite good offtake at various centres.
In all, 21.42 lakh kg of cardamom has been sold this season as against 21.34 lakh kg sold last season during the same period.
While Mumbai and New Delhi accounted for a little over 26,000 kg of the total sales, Kerala centres have accounted for over 50 per cent of the sales at 11.48 lakh kg.
In fact, the recent auctions at Vadanmettu in Kerala witnessed better prices than in New Delhi. The average price fetched at the Kerala centre was Rs 250.01 a kg.
Prices at Tamil Nadu centre averaged Rs 234.82 a kg for this season with the best during the recent auctions being Rs 240.85.
On the other hand, prices at Karnataka auctions centres have been the best among South Indian centres. The prices at these centres have averaged Rs 259.29 a kg as against Rs 345.34 a kg last season.
In the open market, badadana large cardamom with tail was quoted at Rs 6,850 a quintal in Silguri and Rs 6,588/6,812 in Gangtok.
Cardamom without tail was quoted at Rs 7,650 in Siliguri where as chotadana was quoted at Rs 6,550. At Gangtok, chotadana was quoted at Rs 6,500/6,562.
In Mumbai and New Delhi, the badadana was quoted at Rs 8,500/9,000 and Rs 7,500/9,100 respectively.
Small cardamom bold was quoted at Rs 360/370 a kg in the open market, and at Virudhunagar, it was quoted at Rs 326/330 a kg.
