Eyewitnesses Pick Holes In Police Theory On Explosion

THE HINDUSTAN TIMES

THOUGH POLICE have stated that the bomb was placed outside the water tanker, eyewitnesses claim otherwise.

Mohammed Tahir, a vendor, whose shack was next to the tanker, claimed that the bomb was placed inside the water tanker.

"It is opened everyday to fill water. But no one checks it. When the blast occurred, I was packing some goods for a customer. How could there be a bomb in the carton, when I have it here with me?" he said.

Tahir claimed that he had been harassed several times by shopkeepers to shut his business. "They alleged that the vendors had contributed to the overpopulation in the area. In fact, one of them said that a bomb might go off anytime, and it could create problems," he said.

He also claimed that he had been roughed up by some people in the area.

Exactly five minutes later, the blast occurred. While Tahir was reportedly thrown off balance, his nephew, Nazim, and brother Shakir were injured.

"There was smoke and dust everywhere. I could hear people screaming," said Dilip Pandit, who was carrying some food. The impact of the blast threw him on the ground where he lay for some time in a semi conscious state. Pandit sustained injuries on his head and lower part of the body.
