Hilti Sees $3bn Construction Tools Market In Ten Years

Sunil Kataria BSCAL

India could be a $3-billion market for construction equipment tools over the next seven to 10 years, a senior official of Hilti AGs Indian subsidiary said yesterday.

India will absorb $150 billion to $200 billion in the infrastructure sector, and construction equipment forms roughly one to two per cent of that amount, Harihar Aiyar, Hilti India Private Ltds finance director said.

He said the cumulative estimates applied to the next seven to 10 years. Hilti India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Liechten-stein-based Hilti AG. The company makes drilling and assembly machines, wall-fixing technology and construction chemicals.

Hilti India president George Walliser, announcing the launch of its India operations, said the company expected turnover to double every year over the next three to five years.

Walliser said Indias massive need for investment in the infrastructure sector would give Hilti the opportunity to grow. You have a tremendous need for power and for that power plants have to be constructed, he said. Then there are roads, bridges, dams and building constructions which could all use our equipment tools.

According to government estimates, India needs at least $79 billion in the power sector alone to meet shortages. Walliser said the Indian economy was growing at a healthy pace. (Reuter)

I think Indias growth is just right. It is not growing like some other eco-nomies which skyrocket and then crash down.

The Indian construction market is growing at a rate of five per cent to eight per cent per year, and by world standards that is a very good growth rate, he added.

Walliser said Hilti had set up only marketing and sales operations in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Madras but eventually could set up its own plants if business increased. He said Hilti might use India as a regional supply base. (Reuter)

India is very strategically located. We might even use it as a base to supply Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and some of the other countries in the region. (Reuter)
