Iffcos Phulpur Unit Gives Life To Sick Psus

Iffcos new Rs 1190-crore Phulpur fertiliser plant has breathed a new lease of life to several loss making public sector undertakings (PSUs) by awarding contracts for supplying equipment and executing construction work.
The mega plant, designed by Italys Snam Progetti and Denmarks Halder Topso, awarded contracts to Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels Ltd, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), Bharat Pumps and Compressors Ltd, Triveni Structurals Ltd, New Government Electric Factory and Instrumentations Ltd.
Equipment and vital machineries for this plant, which started commercial production recently, have been supplied by several public sector undertakings, including those who are not performing well due to lack of orders for their products.

Though engineering giants like Bhel are doing well, the same is not the condition of other public sector undertakings such as Triveni Structurals.
The Phulpur plant has given a new life to some loss making companies as they were lacking orders for their products, the executive director of the plant, Daya Krishna Bhatt said.
Public sector undertakingsof the region such as Bharat Pumps and Triveni Structurals are facing several financial and labour problems and their functioning is being affected due to disturbances by workers.
The plant has given some relief to these companies but now since the unit has been commissioned, these public sector undertakings may again face problems.
Project consultant Projects Development India Ltd, has been referred to the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction and is waiting for the implementation of some viable revival scheme.
Post-expansion, the production capacity of the plant has gone up by 2,200 tonnes of urea and 1,350 tonnes of ammonia per day, thus taking the total capacity to 3,700 tonnes of urea and 2,250 tonnes of ammonia per day.
The fully automatic plant is expected to narrow down the demand-supply gap of fertilisers in this region, which is witnessing shortages due to sickness of some public sector undertakings.
