Quality Council Of India To Become Operational Soon

Stating this at the CII's fourth summit on `quality' which opened in Bangalore on Monday, the federation's TQM division said CII's efforts in achieving total quality movement among Indian industries have started yielding fruits. According to CII, the fourth summit was yet another opportunity to its 3500 members to rededicate themselves to the cause of quality. Focusing on 'quality in a competitive environment,' the theme of the summit, the three-day summit provides opportunities for the 350 plus delegates to listen to some of the best names in quality from around the world.
CII, in a move to bring quality awareness in India as part of boosting the total quality management (TQM) concept among Indian corporates, has been holding quality summits every year which is organised by its total quality management division.
The list of speakers from institutions included Geert De Raad, secretary general, European Foundation for Quality Management, Roy Peacock, EFQM consultant, UK, and companies like McDonnell Douglas, USA, Motorola also participate.
At the industry level an increasing acceptance of TQM is emerging with the introduction of benchmarking, indicating that Indian companies are at least opening up to some introspection and comparing themselves with world-class manufacturing, CII speakers said. "This quality summit has a very special theme, reflecting the new realisation in industry of the competitive world we live in. We believe that quality can and must play a key role in keeping Indian industry in running for global recognition," Arun Thiagarajan, chairman, CII national committee on quality, said. The summit boasted of some "firsts" like a session on quality in education, focus on QS-9000, a plenary on "business values" and a special session on human values. The summit programme spreads over seven plenary sessions and 12 concurrent sessions, featuring in all 60 speakers, 15 of them from overseas.
To kick off the proceedings, CII had roped in R C Bhargava, MD of Maruti Udyog Ltd, who spoke on his role as the CEO of a quality-driven organisation. The inaugural session also saw the presentation of the CII-EXIM award for business excellence given to Hewlett-Packard India Ltd, Maruti Udyog Ltd and Tata Steel.
