Sbi Caps Bags Tractebels Asia Business Plan Mandate

Tractebel, the 100 per cent subsidiary of Belgium energy major Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux group's sole, has hired SBI Capital Markets (SBI Caps), the merchant banking arm of the State Bank of India, for drafting a business plan for South Asia.

It is for the first time an Indian merchant banker is bagging an overseas contract of a multinational.

SBI Caps officials said, Tractebel's international presence spans stretches over 40 countries and four continents.

SBI Caps will help Tractebel to outline strategic investment plan for South Asia. This includes picking up stakes in power projects and setting up new generation units.

 

The merchant banker will also help the company to form consortiums in LNG (liquefied natural gas) bids as well as forming equity participation in LNG pipeline projects.

In India, officials said, Tractebel is exploring possibilities to stay back in the Bellary power project and wants to focus more on the LNG project.

The company has already initiated talks with Petronet to pick up stake in pipeline projects for Petronet LNG. In both these projects they SBI Caps will be the consultant.

Currently, SBI Caps is working on the state electricity boards (SEBs) restructuring in Maharasthra, Utter Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

The merchant banker has also been working the port privitisation plans of Cochin Port, Murmogoa Port and Kandla Port. The SBI arm is the lead arranger for different independent power projects such as Rossa Power project at Uttar Pradesh, Bina Power project at Madhya Pradesh and Samalpatti power project.

Recently, the merchant banker has been ranked the largest mobiliser of funds in the domestic capital markets for 1999-00, accounting for nearly 44 per cent of the amount raised from the market by way of private placement and public issues of debt and equity.

The company has raised over Rs 27,725 crore by way of private placement, public issues and rights issue of debt and equity.
