Tn Urges Centre To Expedite Draft Plan For Cauvery Water Sharing

The Tamil Nadu government has written to the Centre, urging it to expedite the preparation of the draft plan for implementation of interim award of the Cauvery water disputes tribunal.
Official sources said here yesterday that the attorney-general had on April 9 agreed in the Supreme Court that the Centre would evolve a plan within eight weeks to implement the award.
The apex court had been hearing a special leave petition of the Tamil Nadu government to direct the Centre and the Karnataka government to implement the interim award.

If the plan was evolved early, it would be of great help to the farmers in the Cauvery delta as they could get water for cultivation in June.
The farming season begins in the delta in June.
Sources said the storage position in the Stanley reservoir at Mettur and dams in Karnataka were satisfactory and, hence, the prospects of opening the Mettur reservoir for irrigation on June 12, as usual, was `very bright.
Sources said a team of officials from the state had visited Andhra Pradesh and seen the work undertaken by the government to close the breaches in the Telugu Ganga canal.
