SpikeSource sets up centre of innovation in Bangalore

Bibhu Ranjan Mishra Chennai/ Bangalore
A year after opening a development centre in Bangalore with just three people, SpikeSource, a provider of business-ready open source solutions, has announced the opening of a 'centre of innovation' in Bangalore.

The centre of innovation will house 40 of the total 80 engineers working for the company globally. The centre will focus on bringing out next generation of applications for businesses based on open source middleware and application software.

SpikeSource was founded by Ray Lane and Murugan Pal, two former employees of Oracle in 2003. The company has, so far, raised $37 million in two rounds of fundings from a battery of venture capitalists led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, Fidelity Investments and Intel Capital.

The series B funding through which the company raised $24 million, was completed in September this year. The funding was mainly made to support the company's expansion plan in India and its plans to enter new markets including Brazil, Japan, China and Russia, according to company sources.

SpikeSource works with open source projects and ISVs to bring business-ready solutions to market on a common platform. At present, the company offers SpikeCertified and SpikeIgnited application solutions for content management, business intelligence, messaging and collaboration, and CRM, which are fully integrated, tested and configured with open source infrastructure.

The SpikeIgnite Platform provides a set of tools and services that help simplify and automate the task of selecting the right open source components, and then integrating, building, testing and packaging them to create stacks that are optimised for that solution.
