Tata Group-owned full-service carrier Air India has reduced by half the discount offered on basic fares to senior citizens and students in the economy class on its flights, according to its website. The revised discount on basic fares is effective from September 29. Tata Group took control of the loss-making Air India from the government on January 27, this year. "... (under senior citizen and student concession) for tickets issued on/after 29th September 2022, 25 per cent (discount) of basic fare will be applicable on select booking classes in economy cabin," as per the website. The passengers who were stranded here a day ago after a Delhi-bound Air India plane was forced to land at the Kannur International Airport due to a bird hit, finally left for the national capital on Tuesday aboard another aircraft of the airline. The flight with 135 passengers had originated from Kozhikode and landed in the Kannur airport before flying to Delhi. "A Delhi-bound Air India flight from Bengaluru was routed through Kannur to pick up the 61 stranded passengers," the airport SHO told PTI. They were sent on the flight from Bengaluru as the bird-hit aircraft was still undergoing fitness trials and the airline did not want to further delay the travel plans of the passengers, the officer said. While the bird-hit aircraft was undergoing repairs, Air India also kept open the option of routing a flight from Bengaluru to Delhi through Kannur, the officer said. The Tata Group has started an exercise to evaluate options to consolidate AirAsia India and Vistara under Air India to bring operational synergies among the three airlines under its umbrella, sources said. Air India, which the group had taken control of in January after winning the bid to acquire the national carrier for Rs 18,000 crore in October last year, has set up a team under its Director of Operations, R S Sandhu, sources familiar with the development said. The team will evaluate synergies in operations between Air India Express and AirAsia India as well as between Air India and Vistara, they said. "Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson has set up this team, which will look into synergy between Air India Express and AirAsia India and also between Air India and Vistara and how to achieve the merger," a source said.
