Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that around 100 new positions would be created in the lower judiciary by the Assam government as a step towards faster dispensation of justice in the state. The Centre has approved Rs 9,000 crore for improvement of judicial infrastructure and Assam would receive around Rs 300 crore as its share, Sarma said while addressing the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim here. In addition to that, the state government will provide another Rs 300 crore in this regard, the chief minister said. A wild elephant was killed after being hit by a goods train in Assam's Hojai district on Thursday evening.According to an official, the incident took place when the elephant tried to cross the railway track.Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NF Railway told ANI that, the incident took place near Hawaipur in Hojai district at around 6.20 pm on Thursday when the elephant tried to cross the railway track."The elephant was hit by a cement-laden goods train. Number of crimes in Assam increased by nearly 10 per cent to over 1.33 lakh cases in 2021, according to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Assam recorded 1,33,239 cases of crime last year, up from 1,21,609 cases in 2020, the report stated. Of these, 1,19,883 were Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes 8,325 more than the year-ago period. Crimes related to Special & Local Laws (SLL) also rose to 13,356 from 10,051 in 2020, the NCRB said in its report. It further noted that Assam registered 379 crimes per one lakh population last year. During the year, 1,269 people were killed in 1,192 incidents of murder. The state also logged 2,075 cases of assault on women, 688 sexual harassment, 7,580 cases of kidnapping, 149 trafficking, 1,733 cases of rape and 561 attempt to commit rape. Mobile internet services in several districts of Assam will be suspended for four hours for the second time this month on Sunday for conducting free and fair written examination for grade III posts of various government departments. Prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC have also been clamped near the examination centres to further strengthen security measures. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday reviewed the preparations. Mobile internet services had been suspended on August 21 in 25 districts of the state when the written examination for grade IV posts was held in two shifts of two hours each to ensure that candidates do not indulge in cheating through electronic devices. The final phase of this recruitment drive will be held for a limited number of posts of grade IV on September 11 and no suspension of mobile internet service on that day has been announced so far.
