Bangladesh appoint Mehidy Hasan Miraz as new ODI captain for one year

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz was on Thursday appointed as Bangladesh ODI captain for one year with next month's three-match series in Sri Lanka his first assignment at the helm. Mehidy will take over the charge of the one-day side from Najmul Hossain Shanto, who will continue as the Test skipper while Litton Das will remain Bangladesh captain in T20s. Bangladesh will tour Sri Lanka for two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is from June 17 to July 16. Their next assignment would be an ODI and a T20I series of three matches each against India at home in August. "It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board," said the 27-year-old Mehidy in a BCB statement., He has so far played 105 ODIs since making his debut in March 2017, scoring 1,617 runs with two tons and six fifties and has also taken 110 wickets. Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal on Monday underwent angioplasty after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match in Dhaka. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the incident occurred in the first innings of the 50-over-a-side contest between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club when the 36-year-old Iqbal felt pain in his chest. Tamim, who was leading Mohammedan, fielded for just one over before being rushed to a nearby hospital. Former Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan has been cleared of a suspect bowling action, and now he will be able to resume his left-arm spin. Shakib will now be able to bowl in ODIs and leagues around the world, where he plies his trade after retiring from Tests and T20s. "The news is right (clearing the bowling test) and I am cleared to bowl again," Shakib told Cricbuzz. However, Shakib did not mention where did he took the third reassessment of his action. Veteran Bangladesh batter Mahmudullah on Wednesday announced his retirement from international cricket. "I have decided to retire from international cricket," the 39-year-old, who retired from Tests in 2021 and T20Is in 2024, wrote in a social media post. Mahmudullah ends as Bangladesh's fourth-highest ODI run-getter with 5689 runs at 36.46, including four centuries -- all in ICC tournaments.
