Telangana Assembly: Polling underway on 35,655 polling booths for 119 seats

Polling is underway to elect 119 members of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, with voters queuing up to exercise their franchise amid tight security on Thursday. Voting began at 7 AM in the 35,655 polling stations across the state, officials said. Polling would be held till 5 PM in 106 constituencies, while it would conclude at 4 PM in 13 Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected seats. There are 3.26 crore eligible voters, including 1,63,13,268 male voters and 1,63,02,261 female electors, in the state. As many as 2,290 contestants are in the fray for the upcoming elections, including Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, his minister-son K T Rama Rao, state Congress president A Revanth Reddy and BJP Lok Sabha members Bandi Sanjay Kumar and D Arvind. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address a mega rally here on Wednesday and is likely to lay the groundwork for the BJP's upcoming campaign in West Bengal for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is learnt to have asked Union ministers to actively participate in the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra, a mega outreach campaign aimed at highlighting central schemes. According to sources, addressing a meeting of the Union Council of Ministers on Tuesday, the prime minister said the outreach programme is part of making a "viksit Bharat" (developed India). He asked the ministers to focus on spreading the word on how several schemes have been designed to benefit various sections of the society. Vehicles are being used for publicising government schemes across 2.55 lakh gram panchayats and nearly 18,000 locations in urban areas. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was on Tuesday suspended for the entire winter session of the West Bengal Assembly for making "objectionable remarks" against Speaker Biman Banerjee.
