Uttarakhand: Straight contest likely in Bageshwar assembly bypoll

Five candidates are in the fray in the bypoll to Uttarakhand's Bageshwar assembly seat on Tuesday, with the main contest likely between the BJP and the Congress. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Das in April this year. Das had been winning the seat for four consecutive polls since 2007. The seat has witnessed straight contests between traditional rivals BJP and Congress in successive elections since the creation of the state in 2000. There are five candidates in the fray but the main contest in the constituency is likely to remain between the ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress, poll observers feel. The BJP has fielded the late MLA's wife Parvati Das from the seat hoping to capitalise on sympathy votes to retain the seat while the Congress has pitted Basant Kumar against her. Kumar had contested the 2022 assembly polls from Bageshwar as an Aam Aadmi Party candidate. He quit the AAP to join the Congress just

4-months after ethnic violence, Manipur lies 'forgotten' by Centre: Cong

The Congress on Monday attacked the Centre over its handling of the situation in Manipur, alleging that four months after ethnic violence broke out, the state lies "forgotten" by the Modi government. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that in the last four months, the world has witnessed "how the prime minister (Narendra Modi) has failed Manipur during its worst crisis". In a post on X, Ramesh alleged that "while the prime minister and his drum-beaters are obsessed with G20, four months after ethnic violence broke out on May 3rd, Manipur lies forgotten by the Modi government". The chief minister (N Biren Singh) has ensured that the Manipuri society is more divided today than ever before, he said. "The Union home minister (Amit Shah) has failed to put an end to the violence and ensure the recovery of arms and ammunition. Instead, many more armed groups have entered the conflict," Ramesh said. The prime minister "refuses" to visit Manipur, or lead an all-party delegation,

BJP govt is vengeful body primed against state govts opposed to it: Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday accused the BJP government at the Centre of being vengeful against the states opposed to it and keen on destroying the sovereignty of state governments. The Centre was trying to destroy the entire country through relentless activities, he said in his maiden address on the podcast series - 'Speaking for India.' "Social justice, secular politics, socialism, equity, social harmony, state autonomy, federalism, unity in diversity - an India where these facets thrive in its full glory is the real India. An unparalleled India," the DMK president said in his speech. "The present BJP-led Union government is only functioning as a vengeful body primed against the state governments opposed to it. They only want to destroy the sovereignty of the State governments, which are directly responsible for the welfare of the people," he said. The INDIA bloc was formed to restore an India on the facets that it thrives on and the INDIA alliance is going to s

BJP and L-G Saxena turned Delhi into garbage mound, alleges AAP's Atishi

Delhi cabinet minister Atishi accused the BJP and Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Sunday of turning the national capital into a garbage mound, while asserting that the MCD under the AAP has been working hard for the last six months to clean the roads. In an interview to PTI on Saturday, Saxena said lesser efforts would have been required to clean Delhi had the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the city worked throughout the last nine years. Atishi inspected the Moti Bagh stretch on Sunday. Reacting to Saxena's statement during her visit, she said, "Why has a need arisen to clean Delhi's roads? Why are mechanical sweeping machines being used on Delhi's roads? It is because the BJP did not do anything in its 15-year tenure in the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi). "In fact, the MCD was under the LG for a year, but where did he get the work done? It is with pain that I have to say that the BJP and the LG have filled Delhi with garbage and today, when the AAP-led MCD is cleaning

Udayanidhi Stalin should be arrested: Sushil Modi on Sanatan Dharma remarks

Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Sunday dubbed as "treason" the remarks on Sanatan Dharma' made by Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader Udayanidhi Stalin and demanded his arrest. The Rajya Sabha MP also asked Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad to clarify their stand on the issue, given their affinity with the DMK. "Udayanidhi Stalin should be arrested and sent to jail for having compared Sanatana Dharma to ailments like dengue and malaria, the former Bihar Deputy CM told reporters here. "The statement amounts to treason (deshdroh') since Stalin did not advocate eradication of the ills plaguing the faith, but called for rooting out the faith itself. The DMK has historically been associated with this type of politics, alleged Sushil Modi. Stalin, whose father M K Stalin is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and heads the DMK, made the remarks on Saturday when he was addressing a writers' and artists' meet. Sushil Modi also questioned the "silence of Niti

INDIA bloc has no 'neta' or 'niti', says BJP leader Nityanand Rai

Hitting out at the opposition INDIA bloc, senior BJP leader and Union minister Nityanand Rai on Sunday said the alliance does not have any 'neta' (leader) or 'niti' (policy). The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, who arrived here on a two-day visit to Odisha, said the opposition alliance's recent Mumbai meeting was a gathering of parties and leaders, who are "arrogant, deep in corruption and believe in dynastic politics". "Such parties and leaders are playing the drama of gathering at one platform. On the other hand, the people of India have come together to elect Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister for the third time in 2024 with a thumping majority more than the 2019 elections," he claimed. In its Mumbai meeting, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) alliance was supposed to choose a coordinator for the bloc. However, it has formed a coordination committee of 13 leaders from different parties, the Union minister said. The opposition alliance compris

Infra projects granted to BJP's close friends: Cong targets govt on CAG rpt

The Congress on Sunday targeted the Modi government over a recent CAG report on Bharatmala project, alleging that infrastructure projects have been granted to "close friends" and donors of the BJP and asserted that only a JPC probe can unravel the truth. In a statement, Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said the Bharatmala Pariyojana is aimed at developing 35,000 km of national highways to make freight movement across the country more efficient. "Yet, the most remarkable feature of the project has been the efficiency with which costs have been inflated and projects handed over to the Prime Minister's close friends and his party's electoral bond donors, as shown in a recent CAG report covering the period 2017-21," he alleged. The Congress leader said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) awarded a 250 km four-lane project between Suryapet and Khammam in Telangana to a consortium in which Adani Transport was the dominant partner with a 74 per cent wor

PM Narendra Modi's G20 interview: BJP leaders hail visionary leadership

The BJP and the opposition traded barbs on Sunday over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks in an interview to PTI ahead of the G20 summit, with the ruling party leaders hailing his vision for the country and INDIA bloc parties raising questions on "rising" prices and unemployment. In the interview, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that the 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas' model can be the guiding principle for the welfare of a world shifting from a GDP-centric approach to a human-centric one. Irrespective of the size of the GDP, every voice matters, Modi told PTI in an exclusive interview conducted late last week at his Lok Kalyan Marg residence. Prime Minister Modi said that India's economic growth is a natural by-product of his nine-year-old government's political stability, as he expressed optimism that it will be a developed nation by 2047 with "corruption, casteism and communalism" having no place in our national life. His remarks evoked contrasting reactions from the ruli

INDIA alliance will defeat BJP if it sticks together: Saurabh Bharadwaj

Sticking together is not going to be easy for the INDIA alliance, but if it manages to do so, the BJP will be defeated in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Sunday. Attending a debate at an event organised by the Indian School of Democracy here, Bharadwaj claimed that many parties which are part of the BJP-led NDA, will also join the opposition's INDIA grouping in the days to come. BJP leader Jaiveer Shergill, however, claimed that the constituents of the INDIA bloc are together because of their "hatred" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi even as they differ on several issues. The opposition alliance would not last, he said. In response, Bharadwaj said all parties in the INDIA grouping will have to make sacrifices. "It is not easy for the INDIA alliance to stick together. But if it stays together, Modi ji will not come back." "Many parties which are with NDA out of fear, will join the INDIA (alliance) very soon," he said. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) le

Dilli ka Darbaar can do nothing good for Chattisgarh: Amit Shah slams Cong

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday released an "Arop Patra" (chargesheet) against the Bhupesh Baghel government in Chhattisgarh, accusing it of indulging in scams and loot, and committing atrocities against the people of the state, where elections are due by the year-end. He also accused Chief Minister Baghel of making Chhattisgarh an "ATM of Gandhi Parivar", and claimed that his government has broken "all records of corruption". The minister charged the Congress government of not preventing religious conversions in tribal areas of Chhattisgarh for its vote bank politics. Shah listed out alleged scams related to coal, liquor, online betting being probed by central agencies in the state, and asserted that only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can save Chhattisgarh from the Congress' scams, atrocities and misrule. Referring to the money laundering case related to an alleged illegal betting app 'Mahadev Online Book', he said whether people of Chhattisgarh want the Baghel ...

Congress' Venugopal slams formation of panel on 'One nation, One election'

The Congress alleged on Saturday that the high-level committee formed to make recommendations on "one nation, one election" is a systematic attempt to sabotage India's parliamentary democracy. Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal said the non-inclusion of the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, in the panel and instead, having a former leader of opposition in it, is an insult to Parliament. "We believe that the High Level Committee on simultaneous elections is nothing but a systematic attempt to sabotage India's parliamentary democracy," Venugopal said on X. "In a shocking insult to Parliament, the BJP has appointed a former LOP to the committee instead of Rajya Sabha LOP Sh. Mallikarjun kharge ji," he added. Venugopal said first the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes up with this "gimmick" to distract from the Adani "scam", unemployment, price rise and other pressing issues concerning people, then, to make matters worse, tries to

BJP has assured us of fair deal in govt, LS elections: Praful Patel

Praful Patel, a senior leader of the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party, on Saturday said the BJP has assured his party a fair deal in the government as well as in the coming Lok Sabha and Maharashtra assembly elections. The Ajit Pawar faction joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government in the state in July this year. There was no dispute in the Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP alliance, Patel said at a press conference here. The Bharatiya Janata Party has assured that "justice will be done to the NCP in the government as well as in the Lok Sabha and assembly elections," said the former Union minister. As to the next round of the expansion of the Eknath Shinde cabinet and appointment of district guardian ministers, Patel said discussions were on.
