The BJP on Thursday released its first of 21 candidates for Chhattisgarh and 39 for Madhya Pradesh, including five women each in both the states, for the upcoming assembly polls which are yet to be announced. The party has fielded Vijay Baghel, its Durg MP, from Patan which is currently represented by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel. In a joint operation, the police in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra and neighbouring Chhattisgarh recovered explosives, Maoist literature and other material following an exchange of fire with Naxalites along the border of both states, an official said on Thursday. The incident occurred on Wednesday, Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police Nilotpal said. "The Gadchiroli police had received intelligence inputs on August 15 night about the presence of a Naxalite camp of Sandra LOS (local organisation squad) and other such formations in north of Bhopalpatnam in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district along the border of the two states," he said. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will visit Chhattisgarh on Sunday to attend a state government event in Janjgir-Champa district, officials said on Saturday. Kharge will attend the 'Bharose Ka Sammelan' programme to be held in Janjgir city at 1:30 pm, they said, adding that chief minister Bhupesh Baghel will also remain present. This will be the second visit of Kharge to the Congress-ruled state after assuming charge as the AICC chief last October. The visit is seen as a launch of Congress' campaign for the Chhattisgarh assembly polls, due later this year. Kharge will land at Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur at around 12:10 pm on Sunday and will leave for Janjgir in a helicopter, an official said. The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023 to add two synonyms for the Mahar community in Chhattisgarh to the state's list of Scheduled Castes. The bill was passed by a voice vote in the Upper House. It has already been passed by the Lok Sabha in the ongoing Monsoon session. The bill seeks to add "Mahara" and "Mahra" as synonyms of the Mahar community. Replying to a discussion on the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar urged for its passage. The proposed legislation will help expand the benefits of government schemes and benefits meant for Scheduled Castes in the state to around two lakh more people, he said.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to highlight the problems faced by people due to irregular operations of passenger trains in the state, an official said on Monday. According to a statement issued by the public relations department, the chief minister in his letter said the Railways had cancelled several trains without any prior intimation and passengers have not been informed how long these trains will remain cancelled. Apart from the cancellations, commuters are also inconvenienced due to train delays, he said. The chief minister further said that he had written to the railway minister in the past for smooth operation of passenger trains, but the situation has not improved. "Students, pilgrims, patients, businessmen, labourers among other commuters are severely inconvenienced due to irregular operation of trains. There is anger among the people of the state, and the credibility of the state government and the Railways is being
