Voting began on Monday in the by-election to six assembly constituencies in five states and the Mainpuri parliamentary seat in Uttar Pradesh. Rampur Sadar and Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh, Padampur in Odisha, Sardarshahar in Rajasthan, Kurhani in Bihar and Bhanupratappur in Chhattisgarh are the assembly seats where the bypolls are being held. Election authorities have made elaborate arrangements for the by-elections. The polling was being held amid tight security arrangements. Amid heavy security, polling for the byelections in Maoist-hit Bhanupratappur Assembly constituency of Chhattisgarh will be held on Monday. Seven candidates are in the fray for the bypolls in the constituency, which is reserved for the Scheduled Tribes. The byelection has been necessitated after the death of Congress MLA and Deputy Assembly Speaker Manoj Singh Mandavi due to a heart attack on October 16. The security forces recovered a US-made weapon following the encounter with Naxalites in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district last month, police said on Sunday. Four Naxalites were gunned down by the security forces in an encounter at Pomra forest under Mirtur police station limits on November 26, an official said. At least four weapons were recovered in the operation, of which one is a US-made M1 carbine, he said. The barrel of the foreign-made weapon is small compared to other assault rifles and it is convenient to handle, the official said. As per the serial number of the recovered firearm, the police have launched a probe to ascertain how and from where the Naxalites had procured such a sophisticated weapon, he said. Seven persons were killed after some portion of a limestone mine collapsed on them at their village in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh on Friday, police said. The deceased included six women, they said. The incident took place in Maalgaon village under Nagarnar police station area, around 12 km away from Jagdalpur, the headquarter of the district, a police official here said. "The victims were digging soil in the mine when a part of it caved in, due to which they got trapped under the debris," he said. Soon after being alerted about it, police personnel rushed to the spot and launched the rescue operation, he said. While five persons died on the spot, two others succumbed while they were being shifted to a hospital, he said. As per the preliminary information, only seven persons were digging the soil but the rescue work is still underway, he added.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday said the state will soon have a national-level research centre for sickle cell disease. The chief minister made the announcement while virtually inaugurated sickle cell management centres in medical college hospitals (MCHs) and district hospitals in 28 districts of the state, in a function held at his official residence here. State Health Minister TS Singh Deo was also present on the occasion. Sickle cell management centres, which are set up in 24 district hospitals and nine MCHs, will provide free screening, treatment and consultation for people suffering from the disease, an official said. Speaking at the function, Baghel said a national-level research centre for sickle cell disease will soon be set up in the state. "Sickle cell is a serious genetic disease and to protect future generations from it, creating awareness about it is the most important thing. Early diagnosis of sickle cell disease and better medications can reduce
